Discounts You’re Earning But Not Using

Looking for a new way to save? It’s easier than you think. U.S. News & World Report reveals less-frequently advertised discounts that might apply to you.

1. Checking Account Rewards

If you want rewards, you probably won’t find them at a major bank. If you have an Internet bank, however, you’ll find it easier to accumulate extra discounts.  When you open an Ally Interest Checking Account, for example, you’re automatically enrolled in the Ally Perks program, which gives you cash back every time you use your debit card at a participating retailer.

Your AAA membership is great if your car breaks down, but did you know it also gives you discounted theme park tickets, hotel rooms, travel packages, and more? And sure, you’ll always save money buying ketchup by the barrel at Costco, but the popular warehouse also offers special deals for members on travel and vacation packages through Costco Travel.

If you’re over 50, U.S. News & World Report suggests  joining the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). It offers a variety of discounts on shops, restaurants, insurance services, health products, and financial services.

3. Social Media Promotions

You log on to Facebook at least once a day (if not more), so why not take advantage of the special discounts it offers? Twitter and Facebook store pages have becomes the best places to learn about special events and discounts. American Express recently launched a new rewards program exclusively for Twitter users.

4. Credit Card Rewards Malls

Shop at your favorite online retailers through a portal set up by your credit card company. Pay with your credit card, and you’ll get anywhere from 1 percent to 20 percent off your purchase. That’s on top of whatever rewards your cash-back credit card already earns. U.S. News & World Report discovered the best deals at the Chase Ultimate Rewards Mall and ShopDiscover, but great deals at individual stores vary at each mall.
