Sniffling and sneezing aren’t two of the best ways to attract the opposite sex, but during what experts are saying may be the worst year for seasonal allergies, you’ll probably be seeing a lot more puffy eyes than perfectly shadowed lids.
“I think allergies may be one of those things that prevent you from getting good restorative sleep which is important to human health and functioning,” Dr. Clifford Bassett, medical director of Allergy and Asthma Care of New York and clinical assistant professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine told MSNBC. “If not treated, they can give people a less than desirable appearance; they can affect their day at work. According to one study, they can even affect their sex life.”

According to Dr. Bassett, a mistake that many women make is trying to mask the signs of seasonal allergies with makeup instead of finding relief in proper medical treatments.
“With proper treatment, we can reduce some of the poor appearance characterized by allergies,” Dr. Bassett explained.
Tips to help cope with seasonal allergies:
– Check the pollen count every day
– Don’t exercise outdoors between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.
– Shower and shampoo every night and change clothes before going into your bedroom
– Keep your windows closed at home and in the car and set the air conditioner on re-circulate
– Wear sunglasses to reduce the entry of pollen into the eyes and eyelids
If you think your allergies aren’t that big of a deal, you may want to think again. One company chose not to hire a woman interviewing for a job after mistaking her allergy symptoms (bloodshot eyes, runny nose) for a drug addiction.
