Messiest Home in America Hasn’t Been Cleaned in 17 Years

Flipped over furniture, soap scum, mountains of clothing.

It’s this scene that Style network cameras unearthed inside single mother Lillian Evans’ Virginia home when they arrived to shoot the upcoming special, “Clean House: Messiest Home in America 5.”

“Raising three girls alone took its toll on me,” Evans told “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie as she broke down in tears over the mess she’s been living in. “It did not happen overnight and it was not how I used to be or grew up.”

“Real Housewives of Orange County’s” Vicki Gunvalson, who hosts the special, described the stench she encountered before the “Clean House” crew worked their magic. “It smelled so bad. It smelled like, actually, meat that had been left on the counter for days. That’s that rancid smell,” she said. “It was so dirty I visually thought a dump truck had just dumped a bunch of garbage in the middle of their home.”

“I’m 18 years old and I never remember the house being clean,” daughter Missy, who still lives at home with her mother, chimed in. She said while the mess was frustrating, she learned how to tune it out and even admits to not doing her part to help keep the family home in order.

But with a clean house and a fresh start, Lillian’s girls are hopeful that their mother will be able to maintain a tidy home and work out the underlying issues she’s been trying to address for years.

“It can’t change overnight,” older daughter Erin said. But adds a hopeful note about her mother’s changing habits. “The shopping has improved already.”
