Well it’s officially 2013 and with that comes the hope that the new year will bring renewed hope and possibilities. But if we’re really honest, it’s a bit of a reflection of the past year’s failures. All the things we wished we did better, hoped to have managed better, and in essence a dream of the things we envisioned we could be. In the world of style, there is a tendency for there to be two emotions within us, the woman we are versus the woman we would like to see. To complicate the matter even further, not knowing exactly who this woman is you would like to see staring back at you makes it extremely difficult to find your way when navigating clothing and accessories. So how do we honestly face our style failures of 2012, all the while keeping our hope for the new year ahead? A whole lot of honesty, and a strong style plan!

Let’s be honest ladies. Where did you fail in 2012? Did you have absolutely no style, wandering aimlessly in a cloud of horrific style and surrounded by mom jeans and oversized t-shirts? Did you fail to move to the next level in your style, mastering the essentials like colorful pants with stretch and jersey cotton tees, but never moving to the next level with prints and accessories? Or were you shopping with no real plan, buying based on last minute need, knowing it had nothing to do with love and everything to do with necessity? Whatever the scenario may be, you have to first begin by being honest with where you are, or you have zero style hope for 2013.

On to the strong style plan! This is where things begin to get tricky, as after you’re honest there could be a number of different paths you need to take. To cover all of your bases, there are a few “feet don’t fail me now” rules.

Number one– No matter where you are, begin to push and try new styles, immediately. So many women fail because they a “Once I” attitude. “Once I lose the weight,” “Once I get more time to shop,” “Once I get through the month of January,”…HOGWASH! Stop putting your style on the backburner and get to work. Come rain or shine, you have to look at yourself in the mirror every day, so start really looking and get to work. An example of “pushing your style:” If you’re the type of chick who has great accessories but only bland tops, make it your mission to find at least one fabulous top in the month of January that is a true reflection of your personality and is flattering to your shape.

Number two– You must see yourself in a new way if you don’t like your current style. How in the world can you expect to take your style to the next level when you refuse to change your vision and perspective? The best way to accomplish this is to take what already exists in your wardrobe and mix and match your pieces. However you wore the look in week’s prior, this is the new year, so wear it differently. It’s easy to always wear the matching blazer with the matching pants it came with, but clearly what’s “easy” isn’t working for you, so start wearing that blazer with an unexpected pair of pants, potentially from another suit as an example. Mix it up! If you’re unsure and uncomfortable, that means you’re on the right path.

Number three (and the most important)- only focus on purchasing pieces you truly LOVE. You have to love everything you buy, dream of everything you buy, envision yourself in everything you buy, live in a moment of excitement to wear everything you buy. You must find enthusiasm in your purchases, with visions of you with fabulous hair and makeup. Sounds like a tall order? It’s not ladies, it’s just honest. Be honest before every purchase. Did you buy that top because you love it, or because it was on sale? Do you really LOVE that grey tee, or is it just reasonable and you’re buying it because you don’t know what else to buy? Be honest, and only let go of your dollars for what makes your heart beat faster. FYI- if you’re wondering how to find the “heart beat faster” pieces, no worries, that column is soon to come!
