Tech Tips for Pet Owners

There’s no denying that people love their pets—and there are a lot of them in this country!  About 62 percent of all households in the United States have a pet, according to the ASPCA. 78.2 million dogs and about 86.4 million cats are owned in our country alone.

It only makes sense that pet owners are taking advantage of technological advances to make sure Dexter and Penny are safe, happy and comfortable. Here are some tips and products to help you do just that:

Clean-up Helper: Litter-Robot
Who likes scooping a litter box? Nobody! Enter the Litter-Robot. Once your cat moves on, the Litter-Robot patiently waits a few minutes, to be sure your feline friend is gone, then  sifts out what needs to be disposed of. The waste is placed in a convenient bin for easy removal and emptying.

Thirst Quencher: The Dog Activated Outdoor Fountain
When your dog is having fun in the yard and needs a drink after running around, this automatic water dispenser could come in handy. According to the product description, “A built-in sonar proximity sensor detects a dog’s presence within 3′ and across a 40° angle, automatically turns on the water, and turns it off when the pet leaves.” Attach it to your garden house and your pup will enjoy a fresh stream of cool water, rather than lapping up a drink from a bowl that’s been sitting in the sun for hours.

Lost Pet Tracker: Spotlite2.0
No one wants to think about their pet squeezing through a crack in a fence or sneaking past the pizza delivery guy, but it happens. This GPS device and service is supported by the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery service to provide the a high level of protection.  If your fear becomes a reality, you’ll be able to locate your dog from anywhere at any time using your cell phone, smart phone or computer.

Now that your pet is clean, hydrated and safe you can turn to a product with smart home solutions to make sure his or her other needs are being met on a daily basis, with XFINITY Home from Comcast.

XFINITY Home is a broadband and cloud-based platform that provides the next generation of home security, control and energy management features that allow you to remotely manage your home, and your pet’s wellbeing, from anywhere at any time.

Since we’ve already established that pets are members of over half the families in the U.S., being able to check in on them while you’re away from the house is a smart way to take advantage of the product.

With XFINITY Home, you can access cameras from a smartphone, computer or tablet to see what your new puppy is up to, or how much food is left in the dish. You can also manage home devices remotely by using automated schedules. For instance, arm/disarm doors for the pet sitter and set a real-time text or email alert when doors open and close— so you can see how long they stayed. Or, turn lights off and on, and even adjust thermostats to make your pet comfortable if you’re running late or the weather changes.
