Brad Pitt shocked a theater of fans Thursday night when the mega-star made a surprise appearance to introduce his upcoming movie “World War Z.”

As fans in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania (about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia) patiently awaited the early screening of Pitt’s new zombie thriller, which debuts nationwide on June 21, a door in the front of the theater opened and the 49-year-old actor entered to thunderous applause.

“I just crushed a cheesesteak next door,” Pitt remarked after tossing t-shirts to a few lucky filmgoers. “It really is the perfect sandwich.”

It’s not the first time the actor has surprised fans before a screening of “World War Z,” which is based on the 2006 Max Brooks novel of the same name. Pitt also made secret stops in London, Hoboken and Atlanta. However, the leading man’s appearance near Philadelphia was an obvious choice considering that the film begins with a former United Nations worker (played by Pitt) and his family fleeing the City of Brotherly Love just as a worldwide zombie plague reaches its doorstep.

“We’re really excited to show you this,” Pitt said of the movie. “Why? Because our film opens up in Philly. Spoiler alert — it doesn’t go well. But we’re really excited to show it to you. It’s big, it’s badass and I guarantee you it’s the most intense thing you’ll see all summer.”

A woman in the audience called out: “Is it scary?”

“Little bit,” Pitt quipped to a round of laughter. “But good fun. So do that — have fun.”

In all, the star’s rare appearance in front of an unsuspecting movie crowd in the suburbs of Philadelphia lasted a spirited one minute and eight seconds. Fortunately, just as Pitt promised before exiting the way he came in, each audience member got a “World War Z” t-shirt to remember the occassion. And t-shirts are forever.
