The Philadelphia Film Festival will kick off its 22nd year on Saturday, October 17 with the highly anticipated Robert Redford drama “All Is Lost.”

The Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater will host the Opening Night event, which is scheduled to include an appearance by the movie’s director, Oscar-nominated “Margin Call” scribe J.C. Chandor, who premiered the film at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim.

“I am thrilled to be featuring ‘All Is Lost’ as our Opening Night Film,” said PFF Executive Director Andrew Greenblatt in a press release. “From the moment I walked out of the premiere in Cannes and experienced how special this film was, I knew it had to play our festival. Kicking off the event with this amazing film is the perfect start to what may be our finest line-up yet.”

“All Is Lost” stars 77-year-old Redford (and only Redford) as a man fighting for his life on the Indian Ocean after his yacht is nearly crippled by an abandoned shipping container.

The festival’s last three opening films – “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), “Like Crazy” (2011) and “Black Swan” (2010) – combined for 13 Academy Award nominations, while other past PFF films, such as “My Week with Marilyn,” “The Artist” and “The Descendants,” went on to become the biggest hits of their respective years.

The 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival runs Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 27, and will feature more than 100 films from 35 countries and showcase a dozen unique categories including “From the Vaults,” “Masters of Cinema,” “Greater Filmadelphia,” “American Independents” and “The Graveyard Shift.” This year’s schedule also includes screenings of “Nebraska” (starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte), “August: Osage County” (starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts) and “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” (starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris).

Following the screening of “Nebraska” on Saturday, October 19, Dern will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
