Teen singer Selena Gomez received a death threat serious enough to draw the protection of the LAPD’s Threat Management Unit and the sympathy of a judge, who swiftly issued the pop star a restraining order.

According to TMZ, Gomez – who’s made plenty of headlines recently for her PG-rated PDA with boyfriend Justin Bieber – obtained a restraint against a 46-year-old man named Thomas Brodnicki after he confessed to his therapist his plans to kill the teen star. Giving further merit to Gomez’s claims is Brodnicki’s history with both mental illness and criminal stalking.

TMZ reports that Brodnicki, who was subject to a mental evaluation last month after allegedly threatening to “scratch people’s eyes out on the street,” told his therapist of plans to attack Gomez, and claimed to have held conversations with God about murdering the 19-year-old. He also admitted to having traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles to attempt to meet Gomez and said he visited her workplace multiple times.

In a declaration to the court, a clearly rattled Gomez wrote, “I am in extreme fear of Mr. Brodnicki due to his direct threat on my life, his obsessive, harassing and threatening behavior towards me as well as his criminal history of stalking.”

“I feel that my personal safety as well as the safety of those around me is in jeopardy,” she added.

The restraining order prevents Brodnicki from coming within 100 yards of Gomez and her workplace until a November 4 hearing, after which it may be extended for three years.
