We are living in a material world. That’s good news for Madonna, a world-famous superstar with about a billionty dollars in the bank who can afford all kinds of materials.
But one person it’s not good news for is Madonna’s brother, who is quickly turning into one of the planet’s most famous have-nots thanks to a story that surfaced over the weekend.
According to an article in the Michigan Messenger, Anthony Ciccone, brother of the Material Girl (nee Madonna Louise Ciccone) herself, has been homeless and living under a bridge for more than a year.
The 55-year-old Ciccone has been destitute since losing his job at his family’s vineyard (appropriately named Ciccone Vineyard) last year, and has been left to rely on the kindness of churches in and around Traverse City, Mich., for food and shelter despite the enormous wealth of his relatives.
“My family turned their back on me, basically, when I was having a hard time,” he said. “You think I haven’t answered this kind of question a bazillion times – why my sister is a multibazillionarie, and I’m homeless on the street?”
“Never say never,” Ciccone added. “This could happen to anybody. I don’t have any income. I’ve got to go collect bottles and cans, do odd jobs.”
According to the article, Ciccone is suffering from more than just hurt feelings. His life as a vagrant has led to a host of health issues, including frostbite from the brutal winter conditions of Michigan.
“You get nerve damage [from the cold],” he told the Messenger. “That’s the milder stage. In the severe stage you have tissue damage. That is when you lose parts of your body.”
“I got frostbite on my feet last winter,” Ciccone confessed. “A friend of mine lost all 10 toes. Several have died of hypothermia.”
Presumably, Madonna’s Material Girl fashion line doesn’t carry shoes in their sizes.
