Katy Perry’s newest hit single “The One That Got Away” has a tragic ending, but it’s a regular pick-me-up in comparison to the real-life story of Perry and husband Russell Brand, who announced on Friday the collapse of their whirlwind, 14-month marriage. Adding even more drama to the situation is the revelation that the two never signed a pre-nuptial agreement, meaning Brand is entitled to half of his former flame’s fortune once the divorce is finalized.
Some number crunching of Katy Perry’s estimated wealth reveals that Brand could walk away with up to $31 million. The staggering development comes just days after Brand filed divorce papers in Los Angeles, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Rumors of a separation from Perry were sparked the week prior, when the two were spotted celebrating Christmas thousands of miles apart. Perry and Brand had married in October 2010.
Speaking to the Daily Star on Sunday outside his London hotel, Brand told reporters, “’I’m doing good. Everything is going to be better next year.” Given the amount of money he’s likely to receive, that seems like a bit of an understatement.
It’s worth mentioning, however, that Brand’s bank account was doing just fine before Perry came along. He is worth an estimated $11 million from his work in stand-up comedy and appearances in movies including “Get Him to the Greek” and the remake of “Arthur.”
