Best Bars for Black Wednesday in Philadelphia

By Susan DeFoe,

To many, the biggest party night of the year is the night before Thanksgiving – Black Wednesday. Also known as Blackout Wednesday, the evening of raucous reveling is a tradition for flocks of old friends and college students who leave campus to come home for the holiday weekend. Some say the bar crowds rival even those on St. Patricks’s Day and New Year’s Eve. If you’re hankering for a Thanksgiving hangover, stop into one of these bars for Black Wednesday in Philadelphia.

119 South 39th St.
Philadelphia, PA 19104
(215) 386-4889

Get in on the action at University City’s consummate sports bar. Cavanaugh’s is a local favorite with the college crowd. College Night falls on Black Wednesday this year, so scores of coeds will pack the tavern for free pizza, 75-cent drinks and $11.75 beer of the day pitchers. A DJ will also be on hand spinning the hits to a party hardy house. Be sure to bring your college ID and $5 for the cover charge.

The Plough and the Stars
123 Chestnut St.
Philadelphia, PA 19106
(215) 733-2000

The Plough and the Stars has a dual personality. By day, the bar/restaurant is a respectable Irish pub serving sit-down lunches. When the sun goes down, this Irish Pub is full of party animals, and the bar hosts some of the most boisterous bashes, dancing and drinking in Old City Philadelphia. The impressive bar menu features a wide range of wines, whiskeys and beers. Some claim the popular hangout serves up the best pint of Guinness in town. If you’re looking to come a little early and catch up with old friends over dinner, opt for the Guinness Casserole––tender beef braised with Guinness, carrots, pearl onions and mashed potatoes.

Finn McCool’s Ale House
118 South 12th St.
Philadelphia, PA 19107
(215) 923-3090

Newly renovated, Finn McCool’s Ale House is an Irish bar and restaurant in Center City Philadelphia. Four large-screen TVs and a selection of soccer jerseys line its 20-foot-tall brick walls. A polished wood bar welcomes twenty- and thirty-something customers, offering 18 craft beers on tap. Come early for happy hour specials that include $5 dishes or saunter in later for half off Washington Apples and Wednesday karaoke night, which starts at 9:30 p.m.

Tattooed Mom
530 South St.
Philadelphia, PA 19106
(215) 238-9880

Tattoed Mom caters to party people of every stripe. Inexpensive prices and a casual, quirky atmosphere have made this South Side gem a popular watering hole. With funky second floor walls covered in tattoo-like graffiti from top to bottom, the dive bar features decor that has to be seen to be believed. In addition to $3 burgers on Wednesdays, half off draft beer specials run every night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Booming music, pool tables and free gifts complete the picture.

225 Church St.
Philadelphia, PA 19146
(215) 925-8219

If you’re scoping for kitschy decor, an old-school jukebox and a decent beer menu, then Sugars fits the bill. The underground bar’s circus fun house atmosphere features dark lighting, bowls of Dum Dum lollipops, some retired bumper car seats and a pony. Billiards, foosball and a Nascar pinball machine provide additional amusement for the mixed crowd of bar hoppers. Wednesday deals include $3 burgers, Shock Tops, and red, white and blue Kamikazes.
