A New Hampshire man just bought himself one expensive banana.
CBS Boston reports that Henry Gribbohm, 30, gambled away his life savings in an attempt to win an Xbox Kinect. The culprit in this case wasn’t a slot machine or a casino give-away, but a carnival game called “Tubs of Fun.”
After blowing through his $2,600 in savings, Gribbohm says he didn’t even win the Xbox. Instead, he walked away with a stuffed Rastafarian-style banana.
Gribbohm tells CBS Boston that he began playing the game at a carnival in Manchester, N.H. He found it easy enough to toss the provided balls into a tub during a practice round, but says things changed when he started playing for keeps. Toss after toss, the balls were fatefully ejected from the tubs. He quickly blew through $300 before going home to get an additional $2,300. Soon enough, Tubs of Fun had cleaned him out.
“It’s not possible that it wasn’t rigged,” Gribbohm tells CBS Boston. “You just get caught up in the whole ‘I’ve got to win my money back.’”
Distraught over his losses, Gribbohm returned to the stand the next day and talked with the man running Tubs of Fun. He got back $600 and was given the token banana.
Now, Tubs of Fun has been banned from another nearby carnival while Fiesta Shows, the company who hired the game operator, probes the incident. Local police are also investigating.
But Fiesta Vice President John Flynn tells CBS Boston it’s “pretty next to impossible” to lose $2,600 playing Tubs of Fun. He said he’s never heard of an incident like this before.
Still reeling over his big loss, Gribbohm says he may sue.
“For once in my life I happened to become that sucker,” says Gribbohm. “It was foolish for putting up my life savings.”
