Beyonce’s Baby Name: What Does It Mean?

Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby girl is only two days old, but she’s already generated more headlines than you can shake a Lohan at. First, there were the rumors about Beyonce wearing a prosthetic baby bump. Then there were mutterings about a surrogate mom. Now that she’s made it out of the womb, the baby is once again the subject of speculation due to her unusual name: Blue Ivy Carter.

The last name is the easy part: Jay-Z’s real name is Shawn Carter. As for the meaning behind the other two names, that’s where the rumor mill kicks into high gear.

According to US Weekly, the name Blue may be a reference to Jay-Z’s trilogy of albums, “The Blueprint” 1-3. “I’m the blueprint, I’m like the map for ’em,” he raps in “A Star Is Born” from “The Blueprint 3.”

Diva Power Rankings: Where Does Beyonce Fall?

People magazine suggests the name Ivy may be a play on the Roman numeral four, which is IV. The number certainly is significant to the couple. Beyonce was born on September 4, Jay-Z was born on December 4, and the two married on April 4. The magazine says the two reportedly wear matching IV tattoos on their wedding fingers. Last year, Beyonce released her fourth solo album, fittingly titled “4.”

While those theories may seem like a bit of a stretch, they are vanilla compared to other rumors flying around the Internet. After errant reports circulated that the baby was named Ivy Blue (instead of Blue Ivy), many self-professed experts noted that Ivy Blue spelled backwards is Eulb Yvi, which translates to “Lucifer’s daughter” in Latin. Diabolical plot exposed?

Not so fast. That theory was quickly debunked, since the Latin word for daughter is “fillia.” However, a little thing like “facts” couldn’t stop online chatterboxes from spreading the rumor far and wide. By early Sunday, “Lucifer’s Daughter” was trending on Twitter.

Another hypothesis circulating the web is that IVY is an acronym for either “Illuminati’s Very Youngest” or “Illuminati’s Victorious Youth.” This theory is based off of the belief that Beyonce and Jay-Z are secret members of the infamous secret society Illuminati. Further “proof” supporting this rumor is that BLUE could be an acronym for “Born Living Under Evil.” Likelihood that this theory is true? Zero. Likelihood that it became a trending topic on Twitter? 100 percent.

Some 48 hours after her birth, Blue Ivy remains one of the world’s top news stories. Poor child. But let’s look at the silver lining here: If this baby inherits even an iota of her parents’ talent, she’s got a charmed life ahead of her.
