Levi Johnston is gearing up to become a second-time dad, but when he reflects on his current relationship with his 3-year-old son Tripp, he admits it falls short, according to US Weekly.

“I love Tripp more than anything and he is my son, but I don’t feel like a dad to him,” the 21-year-old Alaskan native says. “But it is what it is, and maybe one day I can be.”

Johnston, who had his first child with Bristol Palin, has accused the Palin family of keeping his son from him and says the limited amount of time he has with Tripp makes it difficult to forge a strong bond.

He also believes¬† Sarah Palin “plays a big role” in daughter Bristol’s decision-making. (Sarah and Todd insist that’s not the case. “We have never hidden Tripp from Levi or discouraged Levi from spending time with him,” the couple recently wrote in a statement to TMZ.)

In an interview with The Insider, Levi’s 20-year-old girlfriend Sunny Oglesby, currently expecting the couple’s first baby, defends any criticism over his parenting skills.

“I’m tired of people thinking that my boyfriend’s a bad father, especially now that I’m having his baby,” Oglesby says. “He’s an awesome dad.”

Johnston adds that he and Oglesby would “love” for Tripp to be a part of their new baby’s life.
