Charlize Theron: ‘I Had No Teeth Until I Was 11’

While it’s hard to believe actress Charlize Theron was once less than gorgeous, the South African-born star recently told The Sun the ugly truth about her childhood.

“I had no teeth until I was 11,” she told the British newspaper. “I had these fangs because I had jaundice when I was a kid, and I was put on so many antibiotics that my teeth rotted. They had to cut them out.”

Known today for her stunning looks and award-winning career—sparked after being discovered by a modeling scout at 16—Theron attributes her present strength to the awkward years she spent pretending to have a normal smile in school pictures.

Perhaps that’s how she managed to pull off her unglamorous role in the 2003 film “Monster,” unrecognizable as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, for which she took home an Oscar.

Although she’s looking more like her beautiful self as the evil queen in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” glamour isn’t a priority in her everyday life.

“I don’t ever think about it as ugly versus pretty,” she said. “There’s a lot of movie people out there that I can’t relate to. Sometimes when I go to the movies, I watch those people and I don’t know them, I didn’t grow up with them, they’re not my friends, they’re not me.”

After ending her long-term relationship with actor Stuart Townsend two years ago while she was on a break from Hollywood, Theron, 36, recently adopted her son Jackson. Now revamping her career, she’s learning to handle her new life as a single working mother.

“I never knew I needed that little sleep,” she said. “I always had eight hours and now it’s, ‘Wow, OK, you can function on just four.’ But Jackson is great. I’ve always been very aware of balance and, even before I had a child, my life always takes priority to my work.”

She adds: “I’m really lucky that I get to go and do this, but my life is pretty kick-ass and I take real priority in that.”
