After years of rumors surrounding her sexuality, Queen Latifah’s May 19 performance at the Long Beach LGBT pride festival has fans thinking the event was her coming out party.
“I’ve been waiting to do this for a long time,” Latifah said of her first gay pride set. The Advocate reports that the star also asked the crowd if they were “feeling all the unity” after referring to them as “her people.”
Despite her statements of solidarity with her LGBT audience, Latifah is denying the claim that she’s come out as a lesbian.
“That definitely wasn’t the case,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It’s just not gonna happen.”
Latifah says her only intention was to encourage her LGBT fans. “When people are going through hatred and bullying, the biggest thing to fight that is love,” she told the entertainment mag. “So that’s all I encouraged my audience to do that night: to share their light and share their love. Period.”
