Remember the little kid from “Jerry Maguire” who spouted random facts like a wise old man? Well, Jonathan Lipnicki has turned into a wise young man, smartly seeking career advice from famous actor and former co-star Tom Cruise.
At the Friar’s Club tribute to Cruise Wednesday night, 21-year-old Lipnicki told Vulture that he made a “cold call” to the superstar’s office hoping for guidance—and he got it.
“I met up with him a few months ago and got his advice for my transition as an actor,” Lipnicki said. “We sat out on the patio to his house and talked about acting. He puts a lot of emphasis on being polite and manners and being on time.”
The young celeb added: “He said to always keep yourself busy, because then you’ll always be motivated to be creative. The more you produce, the more you create, the happier you’re going to be anyway.”
“ ‘Top Gun’ was my favorite movie at the time. I would always say on set, ‘I have the need for speed!’ ” Lipnicki said when asked about his time playing precocious youngster Ray in “Maguire.”
And after all this time, Cruise’s inspiration hasn’t worn off. “I have a poster of ‘Mission: Impossible’ that he signed, ‘You can be my wingman anytime,’ ” Lipnicki said. “And it’s one of those things that, whenever I feel down, it makes me believe in myself.”
