Warren Beatty’s Son Opens Up on Being Transgender

In a new YouTube video, the openly transgender son of elite Hollywood couple Warren Beatty and Annette Bening answers several questions about transitioning from a woman to a man, according to ABC News.

“It’s really important for trans people to have a forum for sharing positive experiences,” says Stephen Ira Beatty, 20, the eldest of the pair’s four children.

He introduces himself by saying, “I identify as a trans man, a f***y queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut.”

During the six minute video, Stephen doesn’t mention his parents once—not even when he identifies who supported him through his transition, which he says began in his early teens when he “transitioned socially.”

Who was there for him? “My friends, my peers, who I’m lucky to have a lot of,” he says.

He also found a role model in gay author Truman Capote, from whom he says he takes style cues. Although he’s undergoing hormone therapy, Stephen says he likes to look “fem,” wearing “lots of necklaces and rings and all and ribbons around my neck and things like that,” which he acknowledges as “a privilege.”

Stephen also talks about his bright outlook on the future, revealing his plans to have a family someday. “I am going to have babies and give them onesies with ‘This is what a transfeminist looks like’ on them,” he says.

With a degree from Sarah Lawrence College, Stephen says he’d like to teach English and encourage people to “imagine one another complexly” by writing poetry, fiction and critical work.

Last year, Stephen clashed with fellow transgender and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Chaz Bono, making headlines after he called Cher’s son “a misogynist who does not represent us.”
