Sherman Hemsley, known for his role as George Jefferson in TV’s “The Jeffersons,” has died at 74 in his El Paso home, local police told TMZ.
According to TMZ’s sources, the actor’s nurse found his body, although at first she thought he was only sleeping.
Sources also said Hemsley appeared to have died of natural causes.
Hemsley was mostly a TV actor, appearing as Jefferson in “All in the Family,” which spawned the spin-off hit “The Jeffersons,” along with his role as Deacon Ernest Frye in “Amen.”
But early in his career, Hemsley acted in the Broadway show “Purlie.” He also sang professionally, releasing the single “Ain’t that a Kick in the Head” in 1989.
Hemsley was unmarried and had no children.
