Two years after splitting with director Sam Mendes, ‘Titanic’ star Kate Winslet looks to be coming out on top, at least in terms of NYC real estate, according to The New York Post.
Mendes has transferred his share of a multimillion-dollar Chelsea penthouse apartment into ex-wife Winslet’s name. The U.K.-based couple purchased the penthouse in Manhattan’s Chelsea district in 2004 for $4.9 million, and had planned to use it for extended stays in the city, although the actress reportedly lived in the property with her children — Joe, 8, her son with Mendes, and Mia, 13, her daughter from her first marriage to British director Jim Threapleton — immediately following the separation in March of 2010.
City records show that it now listed solely in Winslet’s name, and The New York Daily News is reporting that the four-bedroom, five-bathroom home is already up for rent, for a cool $30,000 per month.
Winslet has been famously reticent about the split from Mendes, whom she married in 2003, telling Harper’s Bazaar UK, “‘There’s no way that I’m going to allow my children to be f***ed up because my marriages haven’t worked out,’ she said. ‘I so wish that that wasn’t the case, that that hadn’t happened in my life, but it has. So I will make the best of it.”
The star has admitted that the break up, which came in the midst of filming her title role in HBO’s ‘Mildred Pierce,” was hard, and affected her performance as a divorced woman in the depths of the Depression, says US Weekly.
“There’s a scene where Mildred and Bert are divorced and they sit down together, because they’ve got to settle on a cause,” Winslet explained. “The first stage of my divorce with Sam came through on the very day that we were shooting. So that scene is nothing to do with acting.”
