Update: World Wrestling Entertainment has released the following official statement: “WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”

Original story: World Wrestling Entertainment superstar Darren Young, best known as one half of the tag team “The Prime Time Players,” has come out as a gay man.

The revelation shocked a TMZ cameraman, who caught up with the pro-wrestler at LAX and asked him, ironically enough, if a gay wrestler could find success in the WWE.

“Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay,” Young told the cameraman with a smile. “And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”
The surprised cameraman tells Young that he didn’t know, to which Young replied, “To be honest, I don’t think it matters. Does it matter? Does it change what you think about me?” He continued, “I’m just letting you know that I’m happy [with] who I am, I’m comfortable with myself, and I’m happy to be living a dream.”
When asked how he thinks other WWE superstars will react to Young’s announcement, the wrestler said, “To be honest with you, I’m happy with myself and some people might not like it, some people will like it. But I’m here to please myself, I’m here to be happy. It’s very important I’m happy with myself.”
One WWE superstar already weighing in on the revelation is WWE Champion John Cena, who was also met by a TMZ cameraman.
“Oh, wonderful!” Cena said upon hearing the news. “Good for him. Fantastic.”
Cena said the announcement doesn’t change his feelings about Young. “My oldest brother is gay and openly gay, and coming from family of five boys, that’s extremely tough to admit that and he’s openly accepted by our family.”
He added, “I know Darren personally, Darren’s a great guy and that’s a very bold move for him and congratulations to him for actually finally doing it. It doesn’t affect his work. He’s a wonderful worker in the ring. Darren Young is a consummate professional. I’m actually proud of him for doing that. Kudos to him for being, I believe, the first.”
While Darren Young is the first superstar to come out publicly while a member of the active WWE roster, he is not the first pro-wrestler to announce he is gay. In 2006, late WWE and World Championship Wrestler star Chris Kanyon came out after leaving the WWE, and in 2010, former WWE star Orlando Jordan revealed he was bisexual during a stint with the wrestling promotion Total Nonstop Action.
When asked if he believes he will pave the way for other closeted gay wrestlers to come out, Young said, “I hope so. I’m hoping to be able to make a difference. It’s very important to me that people understand that someone’s sexual preference shouldn’t really matter. It should be about the person.”
