Tom Cruise has admitted for the first time that his divorce from Katie Holmes was sparked, at least in part, by the actress’ desire to distance their daughter Suri Cruise from Scientology.

On September 9, the 51-year-old superstar gave an under-oath deposition as part of his $50 million defamation lawsuit against Life & Style and In Touch magazines, which accused Cruise of abandoning his daughter. When asked by the tabloid’s lawyer whether his divorce from Holmes was motivated by her effort to “protect Suri from Scientology,” Cruise was incensed.

“Listen, I find that question offensive,” the deposition transcript quotes him saying. “I find it, those statements offensive. Like with any relationship, there are many different levels to it. You know, I, I find it very offensive. There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”

However, when the lawyer reworded the question, asking the star if Holmes ever “indicated in any way that one of the reasons she left” him was to protect Suri from Scientology, Cruise replied: “Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes.”

The lawyer also asked if Suri, now 7 years old, was currently practicing Scientology, to which Cruise replied, “No.”

The 48-page deposition has given some insight into the aftermath of Cruise and Holmes’ divorce, which came when the former “Dawson’s Creek” actress filed papers to end their six-year marriage. Among the revelations is that Cruise did not see his daughter for more than 100 days following their August 2012 trip to Walt Disney World.

Despite these details, Cruise staunchly and competently defended himself throughout the deposition, insisting that he’s made efforts to remain in Suri’s life via telephone while meeting the demands of his Hollywood career.

“You have to work at it,” he said. “I’ve gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories and they like hearing it.”

He added, “I’ve gotten pretty good at communicating and I also find that, you know, Suri, you know, is a very happy child and confident and has a good sense of herself.”
