In the late ’90s, there were few musical acts bigger than the Spice Girls, an all-woman pop group that became the biggest British export since the Beatles.
Before stars like Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus captured the attention of ‘tween girls around the world, it was the five Spices — Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham — who amassed screaming fans in droves.
And as it turns out, one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars was not immune to the lure of “girl power.”
While promoting her highly anticipated superhero flick “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” actress Emma Stone appeared on the Australian radio show 2DayFM, which is hosted by comedian Merrick Watts, model Sophie Monk and, occasionally… Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown. Mel B was not able to attend the interview, but she did surprise the 25-year-old starlet with a recorded greeting and an unusual request.
“Oh my god, is Mel B talking to me?” Stone said as her voice began to crack. “Oh my god, I’m so excited! I’m legitimately crying. I’m the biggest Spice Girls fan ever.”
“Hi, Emma. This is Mel B here,” the pop star said in the video recording. “First of all, I want to say I absolutely adore you. And I want to say thank you for being such a Spice Girl fan. Who knew? But my question to you is, why did you like Baby Spice [Bunton] and not me more? And your punishment for that is I want you to do a rendition of one of the Spice Girls’ songs.”
Needless to say, it didn’t take much goading to get Stone to belt out a couple bars from “Wannabe.” Check out the full video clip below to see how she did:
