Justine Bateman Shifts Career Gears

Justine Bateman, best known for her portrayal as Malorie Keaton on NBC’s long-running sitcom Family Ties, has recently scored a new role: writer for The Disney Channel’s most-watched series Wizards of Waverly Place. Through the post-Ties years the actress has landed bit parts in ABC’s Men in Trees and Desperate Housewives, but had always continued to write, without much luck until now. The move marks Bateman’s first script sale of any kind, and in an New York Daily News interview she commented on the change of pace, saying “”My style of writing isn’t this type of writing, I like rising to that challenge. It’s not lost on me that my first sale is a sitcom. I’m thrilled about it.” She went on to discuss the state of today’s sitcoms, saying “Television [networks] used to have an awful lot of sitcoms, it’s interesting to see Disney is really a place where there are sitcoms. Going back 15 years, there were a fair amount of sitcoms families could watch,” she said. “I absolutely love ’30 Rock’ and ‘The Office,’ but I don’t know how many 13-year-olds are watching that stuff.” So is she excited about the new opportunity? “I love having first-time experiences, when you’re past the age of 20 or so, there are less and less first-time experiences.”
