The Starter Wife was such a successful venture for USA networks that producers didn’t think twice to bring it back for ten new episodes. The follow-up series, announced at the USA network’s TCA panel on Sunday, was billed as “the new chapter” of Molly Kagan’s (played by Debra Messing) life, after the divorce that was the focus of the miniseries.
“The miniseries was like summer. Now [Molly's] life begins. Now school begins, and it’s about how she deals with her new love life with a new love interest,” said Debra Messing about her character, “and entering the world of Hollywood, trying to figure out how I’ll make a living and interacting with my ex-husband, much more than expecting….old friends, still lots of laughs.” In the film, Molly will begin a career in television by writing a show about–what else–a starter wife.
Executive producers Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott also indicated Joe Montagna will be featured as a guest star for three episodes, while Judy Davis will come back for eight.
