Alan Colmes, liberal leaning co-host of the popular “Hannity & Colmes” talk show on Fox News Channel will step away from the program come New Year’s Day.

After helming the chair for 12 years Colmes says “although it’s bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I’m proud that both Sean Hannity and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years.”

But don’t count the controversial politico out just yet. Plans are in place for him to remain a guest commentator for FNC and as host of The Alan Colmes Show on FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program for FNC, to air early next year.

The announcement comes as a surprise since the show is as popular with viewers as ever, consistently rated #1 every year it’s been on. I guess Alan Colmes wants to go out on top.
