Returning after a 3-year hiatus, Steve Martin will make a record 15th appearance as host of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, beating back the challenge by Alec Baldwin (13 times) for the title.

Martin, who was a host on the second season of SNL in 1976, may be trying to make up for lost time since Baldwin, who came to comedy fairly late in his career (kick-started by his SNL skits beginning in 1990) has been tearing up the ratings and bagging all the comedy actor awards for his portrayal of Jack Donaghy on “30 Rock.”

Martin’s musical guest will be Grammy nominated singer Jason Mraz, making his own SNL debut, and presumably Steve will be promoting his new movie The Pink Panther 2.

Of course, if John Goodman‘s career takes off again (or if the scheduled host is held up by a freak blizzard) he can make his own run for the title, so far placing 3rd with 12 appearances.

My money’s on Jack.
