Slumdog Millionaire continued to enjoy a night of riches as Danny Boyle was given the Oscar for Best Director. “I want to thank you for the extraordinary show tonight,” he said at the outset of his acceptance speech. “In the room, it’s bloody wonderful.” Boyle has already a wonderful year. His film picked up a Golden Globe and a BATFA award.

Slumdog tells a surprisingly cheerful rags-to-riches tale about an impoverished Indian teenager (Dev Patel) who wins the grand prize on his country’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” only to be arrested for cheating.
