Michel Gondry on Seth Rogen’s “Green Hornet?”

The Green Hornet has been a strange film project. Years ago, Kevin Smith was going to direct a version of it, but he dropped out. In a development signaling a unique tone to this particular superhero movie, Seth Rogen signed on to star as Britt Reid, the crimefighter/journalist, and he’s been buffing himself up to prepare for it. Stephen Chow, the highly inventive director of Kung-Fu Hustle, stepped on board, only to bow out due to creative differences. They must not have been all that acrimonious, though, as Chow has remained on to reprise the Bruce Lee role of Kato, chauffeur to Reid and right-hand-man to The Green Hornet. Now, Michel Gondry has been approached to take over the directorial duties, which further signifies an interesting take on the material.

Gondry is the interesting creative force behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind. This is definitely not going to be your average masked avenger story. All bets are off now for superhero movies, and it’s a glorious thing.

Sometimes, inspiration just strikes. Case in point:

Jingle bells, Batman sells, Dark Knight changed the game,
Joker scored a big award, so these flicks are not the same!

I know, I know. I look forward to my Grammy. To make up for that, remind yourself about the sheer movie-loving glee Gondry showcased in his last work, Be Kind Rewind, to get a sense of what he might bring to The Green Hornet.
