Guide: This Week’s Best of the TV Guest Stars

This week is all about the season finale with one show or another saying so long for the next three months. How depressing! What’s a TV addict to do? Well, luckily the tube isn’t going dark anytime soon, and soon we’ll be inundated with overindulgent summer programming, but before that’s all said and done it’s time to properly bid adieu to our favorite shows for summer. And what’s more proper than shocking twists, oh-no-they-didn’t turns, and much anticipated couplings? How ‘bout some big name guest stars on top of that? Our favorite shows are going on vacation in style, with drop-ins like Carl Reiner who’ll go head to head with Dr. House, Spock beaming up to Fringe, and Amy Ryan’s absolutely necessary return to The Office as Holly Flax! So sit back, break out your day planner, and pencil in the following finales (or just darn good episodes) you won’t want to miss.

Gossip Girl (CW, 8 PM) – Like, oh my God! This episode is the back door set up for the GG spin-off show, “Valley Girls,” which follows Lily van der Woodsen as a California teen in the 80s. Brittany Snow appears as young Lily, with Krysten Ritter as her sister, Lost alum Cynthia Watros as her mom, and 80’s icon Andrew McCarthy (appropriately enough) as her dad. Or tune in because No Doubt performs!

House (FOX, 8 PM) – Carl Reiner will seek treatment from Dr. House during this season finale episode. He’ll play a patient who suffers from dual personalities under the care of a doctor who currently sees dead people. Not exactly reassuring.

One Tree Hill (CW, 9 PM) – Nick Lachey is back. As himself. Perhaps as the wedding singer for Peyton and Lucas’ wedding?

CSI Miami (CBS, 10 PM) – Guest star aside, this episode is about a man who is boiled alive! Shudder. Apart from that warning, it also features the return of Elizabeth Berkley as recurring character Julia, who is about to spiral out of control. Wait, any chance this downward spiral at all resembles Berkley circa Saved by the Bell and the diet pills episode?? I’m so excited! I’m so, so scared!

Medium (NBC, 10 PM) – Reminiscent of Prelude to a Kiss, Jeffrey Tambor is channeling his feminine side in this episode of Medium, where Allison falls into a coma, and her spirit takes up residence in Tambor’s body. If that’s not complicated enough, imagine what happens when Allison tries to go back to normal life with a husband and kids via Tambor’s manly body.

Fringe (FOX, 8 PM) – Nerd alert! Leonard Nimoy of classic Star Trek fame guest stars for the season finale, as the elusive William Bell. Conveniently in time to promote the new Star Trek movie? Maybe…but who cares? It’s Spock

New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS, 8:30 PM) – Scott Bakula, Constance Zimmer, and James Lesure star in the season finale where Christine deals with the impending marriage of her ex-husband to New Christine and Matthew’s newfound love for New Christine’s sister.

Lie to Me (FOX, 8 PM) – Mekhi Phifer and Jennifer Beals’ guest star arcs come to a close (for this season anyway) in this finale episode about a terrorist bombing in DC.

CSI: NY (CBS, 10 PM) – Craig T. Nelson, soap star Thad Luckinbill, and rapper Nelly all guest star in this season finale about an ambush of murders that claims the life of an NYPD officer and leaves one of the CSI lives hanging in the balance.

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 9 PM) – Shannon Lucio, Gilmore Girls‘ Liza Weil and Debra Mooney all reportedly guest star in this two-hour season finale. Exact guest parts are still TBD but expect tears galore as Izzie faces risky surgery, George makes a “shocking announcement (or not so shocking if you follow the rumors), and one trauma victim brings the whole hospital together.

The Office (NBC, 9 PM) – Amy Ryan is back as Holly! Michael Scott’s better half makes her return appearance in this season finale – and 100th episode – during the Dunder Mifflin company picnic. I smell a lovesick cliffhanger.

Bones (FOX, 8 PM) – Eric Millegan returns as Dr. Zack Addy in this finale episode, which also features Ryan O’Neal, Brendan Fehr, and yes, Motley Crue. Apparently Booth and Brennan have all sorts of friends.

My Name is Earl (NBC, 8 PM) – Norm McDonald is back as “Little Chubby” for the season finale which becomes a search for Dodge’s deadbeat dad.

Ugly Betty (ABC, 8 PM) – British songstress Adele guest stars as herself for the final YETI project, a photo shoot. Christine Baranski and Bernadette Peters are also on board for this episode which features two wedding proposals, but only one walk down the aisle. Predictions?

30 Rock (NBC, 9:30 PM) – Alan Alda, Sherri Shepherd, Sheryl Crow, Mary J Blige, Clay Aiken, Elvis Costello, Adam Levine all star in 30 Rock’s third season finale. Hey, it’s not 30 Rock without a large assortment of top tier celeb cameos!

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS, 9 PM) – Cynthia Watros is doing double guest star duty this week. This time she plays a woman caught up in a string of murders linked to a poker scam in this season finale, which also has Gerald McRaney as a guest star.

Numb3rs (CBS, 10 PM) – This season finale features Battlestar Galactica’s James Callis as a cult leader suspected of an abduction, and Lou Diamond Phillips, who returns as Agent Ian Edgerton

Desperate Housewives (ABC, 9 PM) – Gale Harold and Lily Tomlin both return for this two hour season finale which hopefully concludes Dave’s long standing plan for revenge against Susan, Mike, and little, adorable M.J.
