Networks Playing Hardball With Veteran Series

Surprisingly there’s been no word from the networks regarding a few veteran shows that are up for renewal for the fall.

Dramas including ‘Cold Case,’ ‘Without a Trace,’ ‘Numb3rs,’ ‘Law & Order’ and ‘The Unit’ are still in limbo. Also comedies ‘Chuck,’ ‘My Name Is Earl,‘Scrubs’ and ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’ still have no confirmed home for the upcoming television season.

What gives?

“What you’re seeing is networks playing hardball, especially with their more mature shows, when negotiating license fees,” a network insider told the Hollywood Reporter. “There may be a few surprises at the upfronts next week with shows not coming back, or even jumping networks.”

Seems the networks are using the state of the economy to push long-wanted cost-cutting measures into place for these older series.

At least the regarding the fate for some of our favorites can’t last forever. We’ll know next week when the networks sit with the press and major advertisers just how these series fared.
