Tuned In: What’s Hot, Hotter And Definitely Not Happening In TV

I attended the CBS upfront presentation of their new Fall lineup yesterday, and one thing’s for sure: Alex O’Loughlin is a definite TV star. The clips CBS showed of his new hospital dram ‘Three Rivers‘ really delivered, and it’s not hard to see why CBS has held onto this Aussie star-in-the-making after vampire series ‘Moonlight‘ was canceled. LL Cool J rocked the house with his performance of “Mama Said Knock You Out,” and the rapper/actor’s ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ should be a big hit next season. It will also be interesting to see how reality show ‘Undercover Boss’ develops – the clips shown were very promising. And now, on to last night’s TV…

What’s Hot: Wednesday Ratings
American Idol‘ crowned Kris Allen its Season 8 winner in a shocking upset over front-runner Adam Lambert, but that wasn’t the only surprising news. ‘Idol’ had its lowest rated finale ever in the 18-49 demo, despite such varied artists as KISS, Rod Stewart, Jason Mraz and Queen Latifah performing. The Tuesday performance show was also the lowest-rated final performance episode for the series yet. ‘Idol’ still finished the season 1-2 in the ratings but was down significantly from last season. It’ll be interesting to see if the networks can make more headway next year vs. TV’s top show, especially with ‘The Mentalist’ moving to Thursday nights.

What’s Hotter: NCIS: Los Angeles

The previously mentioned ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ should be the most sure bet of the fall. The new series got a plum slot on CBS’s just announced 2009-2010 schedule, airing Tuesdays at 9pm ET after the flagship ‘NCIS.’ Viewers already got to meet the characters in back-to-back episodes of the original series this season, and with fan favorites such as Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J, go ahead and pencil this one in as a winner for the upcoming season. CBS obviously has a lot of faith in the show to move ‘The Mentalist’ to make room for it.

What’s Definitely Not Happening: Privileged

Poor ‘Privileged.’ Things were looking up for the first-year CW series starring Joanna Garcia recently, with rampant online rumors that the show was “looking good” for a second season, despite extremely lackluster ratings. At this morning’s CW upfront presentation the word came down officially that the series has been canceled. Although not completely surprising, it is sad the fans of the show might have had some false hope lately, but alas we will see next season such shows as ‘Melrose Place,’ ‘Vampire Diaries,’ and ‘Beautiful Life.’
