Alan Rickman plays a Nobel Prize winner who is so self-absorbed that when his son (Bryan Greenberg) is taken for ransom, he has to be browbeaten by his wife (Mary Steenburgen) to part with his prize money, and this also inspires his son to begin to sympathize with his own kidnappers.
