Speidigate 2009: Al Roker Defends His Interview

Al Roker is standing by his interview with Spencer and Heidi Pratt.

In a chat with his co-host Meredith Vieria on the ‘Today’ show this morning, the gentle giant said he did not believe he had verbally attacked the pair, as Heidi had suggested. “I believe I asked what a lot of people wanted to know,” he said.

The cantankerous duo sat down with Al Roker yesterday to talk about their appearance on ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here.‘ Roker questioned the pair about the truthfulness of their assertion that they had been tortured in the jungle, and sternly asked a visibly flustered Heidi if she was proud of her behavior on the show.

Speidi was not happy with the line of questioning. They later went on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and said they had been “attacked” by the host. Heidi felt particularly affected, saying “I really would advise women especially to be careful around him, because I feel like he definitely came and attacked me, and I did not appreciate that at all.” And in true Speidi form, Spencer later suggested that the fact he was “saved by Jesus” stopped him from having “ripped” Roker’s head off.

But Roker’s not in the least bit apologetic. “If he had tried to come across,” Roker told Vieria about Spencer,” I would’ve dumped him like a bag of dirt.” And how about Heidi’s assertion that he was a possible danger to women?

“Come on, I’ve interviewed hundreds of women on this program and never had a complaint,” he said.

“Look,” Roker added, “they are so un-used to people actually asking them a real question, that they didn’t know how to handle it.”

When Vieria then asked if it was reporters who build up these types of stars, Roker responded with “There are a lot of celebrities — real celebrities, who’ve actually done something — who [can] act civil.”
