Twelve year old Kathryn Newton plays Jay Mohr’s wise-beyond-her-years daughter Louise on CBS’s family sitcom Gary Unmarried.

In real life, she is every bit as precocious, dropping names with the aplomb of a seasoned Public Relations flack.

The young actress and golfer gave Fancast the scoop on the upcoming sophomore season, premiering Wednesday September 23rd.

What’s it like working with Jay Mohr?

He’s so much fun. He makes me laugh all the time. He has a really cute little puppy named Mabel. It’s a Yorkshire Terrier and it’s the cutest dog in the whole world. Her tongue sticks out like a little baby’s.

What have been some of your favorite scenes together?

My favorite scenes with Jay Mohr were in an episode where I play golf. The ending scenes where I’m with him and he tackles me and we’re at dinner because he gets in trouble. It was [the episode] “Gary Goes First.”

What is going to happen in season two? I read Gary will be pursuing a career in radio?

Yes. [There are] new people in our cast that work at the radio station. Brooke D’Orsay and Keegan Michael Key. I’ve been doing a lot of scenes with Rob Riggle who plays my uncle Mitch. In the first episode there’s some really funny things that him and I do. You have to keep an eye out for it.

I hear the producers used some of your ideas about Louise.

In the first season I told the producers to make an episode about golf. So they wrote an episode [where] I beat my brother at golf. Jane Curtin and Martin Mull were in the episode, which was really cool.

You’re an excellent golfer. How did you get interested in the sport?

My father got me into golf when I was eight. I’ve been golfing ever since. Every year I go to North Carolina for the World Championship for Kids. This year we played Pinehurst [course] number three… This summer I went golfing with [director] Jim Burrows at Bel Air country club, which was a lot of fun.

Louise also plays the cello. Did you learn how to play for the show?

Yes I did. That was so much fun because I had a tutor to help me learn. I also got to learn Mandarin.

Do you think Lousie is a good role model for girls your age?

Yes I do because she’s environmentally conscientious and she’s very eco-friendly. She’s politically correct.

What are some of your favorite TV shows?

I like Gossip Girl because I like their fashions but I don’t get to watch a lot of it. I like Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place and I also like Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’m not really allowed to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm if it’s inappropriate, but I watch it with my parents.

What is a typical day like for you on the set?

I get to the set at eight in the morning and I have my wonderful teacher Susan and we do school for a few hours. Then at ten I go to set and I do rehearsal. Then I have lunch and I go back to school. Then I have run through. That’s when all the network executives, producers and writers come to make sure everything’s going [well.]

Do you miss going to school with other kids your age?

I go every hiatus. I’m still able to be with all my friends.

When you hang out with your friends, what do you like to do?

I live on a golf course and we have this big tree. We call it our tree. We go and climb it. We ride bikes around the golf course and we go to the beach. I love to have sleepovers.

I saw some video of you singing on the red carpet at the Jonas Brothers premiere.

I learned not to sing on the red carpet anymore.

Anything you’d like your fans to know about you?

I don’t really call people idiot the way Louise Brooks does. She gets to do it all the time and I know for a fact that if I did I’d be in big trouble.

Do you want to keep acting when you grow up or become a professional golfer?

I want to do both. Acting is a whole lot easier than golf, though. That’s a fact.
