The bizarre story of the ‘balloon boy’ just became a bit more unbelievable.

The family of the Colorado boy at the center of the ‘flying saucer’ fiasco appeared on CNN Thursday night in an uncomfortable interview filled with awkward pauses–and one possible bombshell. Was it all just a hoax?

During the interview, six-year-old Falcon Heene admitted, “We did this for the show.”

Kids say the darndest things, don’t they?

Falcon’s father was stunned into silence when his son said that to Wolf Blitzer, who had asked the little boy why he didn’t come out of hiding when he heard his parents frantically calling his name.

The family set authorities–and every news channel–on a wild goose chase earlier in the day after leading everyone to believe the kid had floated away in a homemade helium balloon. He was actually hiding in a box in the attic for four hours.

Here’s a clip of the interview, surely to be scrutinized in the coming days:

When Blitzer asked the child’s storm-chaser father to clarify what the boy meant by, “We did this for the show,” Richard Heene hesitated, dodged the question and rambled a bit before becoming insulted by the suggestion that the incident was a publicity stunt.

“I’m kind of appalled, that after all the feelings that I went through, up and down, that you guys are trying to suggest something else…I’m really appalled,” said Heene, as Falcon squirmed and fidgeted in his father’s lap.

Falcon’s parents say they believed 100% that the boy was inside the balloon, and his mother Mayumi claimed they searched “all possible places” for their son during the drama.

But that doesn’t explain little Falcon’s remark. ‘We did it for the show?’ What show? The CNN show? The ‘Wife Swap’ show? Or perhaps some new show the family would like to be on? An inside source tells Fancast that the Heene family auditioned to be on two other reality shows, in addition to their two appearances on ABC’s ‘Wife Swap.’

It’s possible Heene floundered during the interview because he is still ‘freaked out’ over the frightening ordeal…or he’s freaked out that the media is calling their bluff.

As speculation swirls over the validity of the story, TMZ reports the Larimer County Sheriff’s Dept. is “investigating the situation.”

What do you think of the interview? Should the parents be held accountable for the saga that captivated millions?
