ISTANBUL (AP)– Turkey’s government says it was not involved in a Turkish TV drama series that portrays Israeli soldiers as murderers and drew angry protests from Israel.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said this morning that Turkey is not “based on censorship” and that the state has no right to comment on the quality or opinions expressed in broadcasts.

The series is appearing on Turkey’s state-owned TRT television, which is allowed some autonomy under the law.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has rebuked Turkey’s acting ambassador, saying the Turkish series is “incitement” and could spark attacks against Jews visiting Turkey.

Muslim Turkey’s ties with Israel have deteriorated since Israel’s winter offensive against Islamic militants in Gaza, which killed some 1,400 Palestinians.
