It most definitely does not suck being a vampire, especially when you get to work opposite Ian Somerhalder. That’s the good word from Kayla Ewell of ‘The Vampire Diaries‘ (Thursdays at 8/7c, The CW), whose Vicki is now feeling a need to feed thanks to undead Damon. Ewell fed us a few peeks at this week’s Halloween-themed episode and detailed the difficulty of having such a pretty leading man.
That’s quite an appetite Vicki has there! I Tweeted that in her first feeding, she ate more than the ‘90210’ girls combined.
You did not! That is the best thing ever.
I guess you conquered the squeamishness you had when you first got fitted for fang marks.
Yeah. I don’t really hate blood that much – I like gory movies – and when you’re the one feeding it’s not as intense. You just think of it as, “I’m eating food.”
What is it you’re slurping on there during a feeding?
It’s corn syrup, which is sticky and warm, but with other stuff in it as well. It’s really gross, but they have spit buckets for us. [Laughs]
You seem to be having a lot of fun with Vicki.
When I first saw the script I said, “I want to be Vicki,” and my agents were like, “Are you sure you don’t want one of the other roles?” I said, “No, I want to be Vicki” – and ever since I got it it’s been a whirlwind experience. And then when [showrunner] Kevin [Williamson] called me and said, “You’re going to be a vampire”? Oh my God. I’ve never had the opportunity to play an animalistic character before.
How does one properly prepare to dance around a house half-naked with Ian Somerhalder?
[Laughs] By of course dancing around the house naked! No, I usually would have been so nervous about a scene like that, but Ian is so gorgeous and sweet and open, he makes you feel good about yourself. I respect him as an actor, I think he’s so good. I was a big ‘Lost’ fan, and when Boone died I was so disappointed!
So the fact that Ian has, like, “8-pack” abs is simply icing on the cake.
God…. When he arrives on the set in the morning, we’re like, “Dude, you’re not allowed to wake up that pretty in the morning.” He has naturally flushed cheeks and his eyelashes are all dark and those blue eyes….
What can you tease about this week’s Halloween episode?
Let’s just say that Vicki goes on a feeding spree and tries to get revenge on some people that she doesn’t like.
How does Stefan try to help her?
He and Damon are trying to teach me the “perks” of being a vampire. While Damon spends time teaching me how to vamp-feed and other fun stuff, Stefan is more the “fatherly figure” showing me the ropes. They think of me as “a vampire with issues.” [Laughs]
Which guy from Vicki’s life would you say is in greater jeopardy – Jeremy, Tyler or Matt?
I don’t think Vicki would feed on her brother, so Tyler or Jeremy – but for different reasons. Tyler because Vicki doesn’t like him right now, and with Jeremy, there’s this whole thing where when you get sexually aroused you want to feed on someone. That gets to be a problem.
You probably raised some eyebrows with the spread you did for ‘Maxim.’ Were there any poses that gave you pause?
They wanted more risqué poses that I did not do, but the agreement was I would do this on my terms. It’s not necessarily something I would picture myself doing, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. Speaking of raised eyebrows, I’m sure my parents were in that group! [Laughs] I warned them, and when it came out they were like, “You look fantastic… but it’s not something we’re going to be showing our friends.”
How do you stay in shape?
You’re going to hate me. I have not been to the gym in like three-and-a-half months. And I eat hamburgers all the time.
Do you find that you like them a bit more on the, um, pink side these days?
[Laughs] That is so good! Yes, you can quote me as saying, “I find myself liking my hamburgers a little more rare!”
