After a largely unwatched run on Lifetime, ‘Project Runway‘ zipped up its sixth season last night with a new champion: 27-year-old Irina Shabayeva.
Turning out a heavily monochromatic (re: black) collection mixing sportswear, knitwear, eveningwear, and homespun t-shirts, Irina demonstrated a knack for showmanship, pairing subtly different caps and matching accessories for each of her 13 creations.
Beating out fellow competitors Althea Harper and Carol Hannah Whitfield, Irina’s inspiration was based on her home town of New York, and, according to her, “what it takes to survive in the city as a woman, and comforting and shielding yourself.”
The win brought the normally stoic designer (nickname: Meana Irina) and her family to tears. “I think my father is finally going to take me seriously on this whole fashion adventure I’m on,” she confessed.
As the winner of season six, Irina will receive an editorial feature in an issue of Marie Claire magazine, a cash prize of $100,000 to start her own line, and an an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Paris.
