‘FlashForward’ viewers were given a surprising look into the future at the close of Thursday’s winter finale when a “coming soon” promo revealed that the freshman drama would not be returning with new episodes until March.
ABC later announced March 4, 2010, as the exact date ‘FlashForward’ will resume.
The network also has specified a March 30 return date for ‘V,’ which will air Tuesdays at 10/9c, leading out of ‘Lost’ (which launches its final season February 2).
The ‘FlashForward’ scheduling change not only means fans will have to wait longer to see what happens next; it also threatens to mess with the show’s plan to air its version of April 29, 2010 – that critical date that everyone flashed forward to during their blackout – on the actual April 29, 2010.
An ABC insider, however, tells Fancast that while nothing is certain yet, the coordination of fictional and real dates “still might work” under the new roll-out plan.
ABC originally had penciled in ‘FlashForward’ for a January comeback, but upon further review opted for a March return so as to wrap up Season 1 with an uninterrupted run of fresh episodes.
The move also effectively keeps the new series out of harm’s way – meaning, it won’t have to compete against NBC’s February coverage of the Winter Olympics.
As for what will occupy ‘FlashForward’s’ Thursday time slot for the interim, ABC has a pair of series waiting to premiere: the legal drama ‘The Deep End,’ and ‘Happy Town,’ which revolves around a small-town murder mystery.
