Bryant Gumbel made a surprise announcement on ‘Live with Regis and Kelly‘ Tuesday while filling in for Regis Philbin, who’s recovering from hip surgery.
Gumbel, 61, revealed he has lung cancer and had surgery two months ago to remove a malignant tumor on his lung.
“They opened up my chest; they took a malignant tumor, part of my lung and some other goodies,” Gumbel said. “The pathology on most of the stuff came back benign but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment.”
The former ‘Today Show’ host kept his treatment private.
“We had told a few people. We told my family, obviously,” Gumbel said. “I even kept it from my staff at ‘Real Sports.’ “
Gumbel left his post as co-anchor of ‘The Today Show’ in 1997 after 15 years, and currently hosts HBO’s ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.’
