Opening Wide: Daybreakers, Leap Year, Youth In Revolt

Here’s what’s opening in theaters nationwide as the first batch of new films for 2010. We’ve got the Amy Adams rom-com Leap Year, Michael Cera’s quirk-com Youth In Revolt, and a reminder of what vampires used to be like before Twilight came along with Daybreakers. Michael Cera stars as a nebbish teenager on an unfortunate family vacation who nonetheless meets a mysterious and beautiful girl (Portia Doubleday) and falls like a rock for her. When circumstances keep them apart, he goes to disturbing lengths to make sure she doesn’t go astray – including manufacturing a seperate, more dangerous personality.

Ethan Hawke stars as a scientist in a world dominated by vampires who is trying to solve his people’s food crisis without harming any of the few remaining humans in the world. That is, until Willem Dafoe shows up and shows him that there’s a much different way out of their predicament – a way that evil corporate vampire Sam Neill is out to stop.

Amy Adams is a busy, anal-retentive rich woman who tires of waiting for her boyfriend (Adam Scott) to propose, so she decides to surprise him in Ireland with a proposal based on an old Irish tradition of women popping the question on February 29. However, everything goes wrong and she winds up having to travel across Ireland with the help of a poor local (Matthew Goode), and despite hating each other at first blush, the last blush will turn out to be something different entirely.
