Johnny Depp and Salma Hayek have agreed to star in director Emir Kusturica’s Wild Roses, Tender Roses, retelling the story of Mexican Revolutionary general and hero Pancho Villa. It’s said to be an epic film heavily influenced by Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns and Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch. But don’t expect that project to start shooting for another year, as Kusturica’s busy with another project. Depp and Kusturica teamed up before with the film Arizona Dream.
This is interesting, having a white guy from Kentucky play a Mexican hero, but it won’t be the first time that’s happened. Legendary Greek actor Telly Savalas starred in Pancho Villa, which you can watch right here, right now on Fancast if you want to get a better idea of what to expect when Depp takes on the role.
