Richards: Sheen Called Her from Jail, Situation Is ‘Sad’

Oprah got Denise Richards to open up about her “abusive” relationship and “hostile” split from Charlie Sheen in a candid interview on Tuesday’s ‘Oprah Winfrey Show.’

Richards revealed that her ex-husband called her collect from jail on Christmas day, after Sheen got arrested on charges of domestic battery for allegedly assaulting his new wife, Brooke Mueller.

“I actually got a collect call on Christmas from Charlie,” Richards tells Oprah. “I thought it was odd that he was calling collect … he said, ‘I’m in jail.’ He said that him and Brooke had gotten into a fight and she had called the cops.”

Sheen, who asked to speak to his daughters during the call, was arrested on December 25th in Aspen, Colorado for second-degree assault and menacing. He was later released on bail but is due back in court in February.

Richards and Sheen spent New Year’s Eve together with their two daughters, because Denise says, “It’s important for my kids.”

The ‘It’s Complicated‘ star also discussed the abuse that took place during her marriage to Sheen. (The two married in 2002 but divorced in 2005, and Richards claimed Sheen had threatened her life, and had an addiction to drugs, alcohol, pornography, and prostitutes.)

“There were times during the marriage where there was a lot of verbal abuse. He never hit me,” Richards said. “It was a lot of verbal arguments [that] got extremely heated [and] that scared me. … I think that Charlie has a very sharp tongue.”

Richards also felt a sting when the marital issues escalated and she had to file a restraining order. “I was humiliated. I was embarrassed,” she says. “Of course when things are so public and being called all these things, it was very, very difficult. I hit rock-bottom during all of this.”

What got her through those difficult years? Her daughters, Sam, 5, and Lola, 4. “I did not want this life for them,” the Hollywood mom explained.

Richards says she feels “very sad” for Mueller and Sheen. “They have two little baby boys. Their dad was, you know, in jail on Christmas,” she said. “On the other hand, I think perhaps people can understand what I was going through a little bit.”

Mueller, who also filed a restraining order against Sheen after the Christmas altercation, was just released from the hospital, where she was recovering from pneumonia and “fluid in the lungs,” according to TMZ.
