‘American Idol‘ gossip mongers might want to check their lie detectors for defects, because all this chatter about Howard Stern replacing Simon Cowell as a judge next season appears to have been nothing but a big hoax. The Daily Beast spoke with “insiders” that claim there hasn’t been any kind of offer thrown Stern’s way from ‘Idol’ producers. One source went so far as to say Stern was never even considered for the gig.
Just how did this rumor gain so much traction? Well, credit must be given to the radio entertainer himself, who first started talking up the idea of judging the Fox “karaoke contest” on his Sirius XM radio show, leading to Internet sites exploding with word that he would be the next ‘Idol’ judge.
But, Zap2it.com thinks Stern might actually have been talking about another talent show, ‘America’s Got Talent,’ based on the timeliness of former ‘Talent’ judge David Hasselhoff getting the boot and being replaced by Howie Mandel.
To make matters worse, all of this talk about Stern jumping aboard ‘Idol’ pissed off not only newly crowned judge Ellen DeGeneres, as earlier noted on Fancast, but also the Parents Television Council. Not a group known for its sense of humor, PTC quickly responded to the mere rumor of Stern’s hiring, claiming such a move “would spell immediate death” for ‘Idol.’
Always one to get in the last word, Stern took to the airwaves once again, launching an attack on DeGeneres — he called her a “dummy” and ranted that she’s “getting money for doing nothing.”
Were Stern to actually join ‘Idol,’ the awkward tension between him and DeGeneres alone would be well worth the confusing rumors.
