Fox’s ’24’ has halted production on its eighth season so that series lead Kiefer Sutherland can undergo a surgical procedure to repair a ruptured cyst near his kidney.

“We hope to resume production shortly,” 20th Century Fox Television said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times, “and do not anticipate any disruption in the broadcast of this season’s episodes.”

A production source tells Fancast this break comes with four episodes left to film for the current season. A two-hour finale is projected to air on May 24.

Although the cyst rupture happened early last week, production on the action-drama briefly continued without Sutherland.

“While Kiefer… is frustrated to miss even one day of work, he and Fox decided together that it would be best to complete this minor elective procedure now, as a precaution, as opposed to six weeks from now when production wraps,” Sutherland’s publicist, Evelyn Karamanos, told the Times. “He looks forward to returning to work next week.”
