Woody Harrelson’s Oddball Superhero Saga ‘Defendor’

Woody Harrelson’s on a roll with his huge hilarious hit Zombieland and his Academy Award nomination for The Messengers, so who’d have thought that when he starred in a superhero movie, it would be a small indie film? He’s never done anything all that normally, though, and that M.O. continues in his starring role as Defendor, which adds a whole new layer of depth to what’s great about the genre by showcasing one of the more lovable crimefighters you’ll ever see.

Woody took some time to talk about the movie at the Academy Awards luncheon. “I was really excited because Sony picked it up in Toronto,” he said. “It’s a wonderful movie. My character, Arthur Poppington is a guy who thinks he’s a superhero, but of course he’s not. He puts on a suit. He’s just a regular guy – well, not regular, he’s a little, shall we say ‘slow.’ He goes out and tries to fight crime – not too successfully. I love the movie, and I get the feeling it’s not going to get much play, though, unfortunately.”

Yes, it’s going to have a small release, but it really is a cool movie, so make an effort to see it if you get the opportunity. It also stars Kat Dennings as the drug-addled hooker that stumbles into Arthur’s life, Sandra Oh as the psychiatrist trying to analyze him and Elias Koteas – who really looks like he should play Christopher Meloni’s brother in something – as a corrupt cop who is essentially the Anti-Elliot Stabler.
