When Katie Couric fled morning television to anchor the nightly news — on a competing network –‘The Today Show‘ welcomed Meredith Vieira as its new co-host opposite Matt Lauer, and with the latest addition to the show extending her contract for another year, the chemistry between Matt and Meredith will continue, at least until 2011.
Vieira has agreed to stay on ‘Today’ up until next fall, and a network source thinks the contract renewal means NBC’s morning show is looking good, reports the New York Times. “For her to say, ‘I embrace these hours, I embrace these people,’ really talks about the strength of the franchise.”
A quick glance at ‘Today’s’ ratings prove that NBC is a definite power player, at least during weekday mornings, as it averaged 5.7 million viewers prior to the winter Olympics.
Should Vieira leave ‘Today’ when this latest contract expires, there’s always Ann Curry waiting in the wings. Having been considered a front runner for the slot when Couric left, Curry recently told Guideposts magazine she would have “loved” the gig.
As for NBC, the network hasn’t made any comments on the matter.
