There was a lot of hype over Kathy Griffin kissing Mariska Hargitay on a recent episode of ‘Law & Order: SVU.’ But if you were watching for the lip-lock, it was nowhere to be seen.

“They DID cut the kiss with Benson,” Griffin wrote on Twitter afterward.

The kiss itself wasn’t much to get excited about. Griffin guest starred as a lesbian activist character named Babs Duffy planted one on Hargitay’s Det. Olivia Benson, and Olivia pulled away. Babs said she thought Benson was gay, explaining “You’re like Ellen, Joan Crawford, and Calamity Jane all rolled into one. You can balance a checkbook, I’ll throw in Suze Orman.”

NBC has not commented on why the actual kiss was edited out of the episode, so it’s unclear if the decision was for artistic reasons. Or are we still experiencing ‘Adam Lambert After Shocks’?

When ‘American Idol‘s Adam Lambert appeared on CBS’s ‘The Early Show‘ in December, the network blurred out his controversial same-sex kiss from the American Music Awards even though it had already been widely seen.

It’s hard to believe that the Peacock network would backpedal with ‘SVU,’ after breaking ground way back in 1992 with the lesbian kiss on ‘L.A. Law‘ shared between bisexual attorney C.J. Lamb (Amanda Donahoe) and her bi-curious colleague Abby (Michelle Greene).

Then Roseanne Barr famously kissed Mariel Hemingway on an episode of ‘Roseanne‘ and it seemed as if the taboo had passed.

But we’ve learned that sometimes one step forward can be followed by two steps backward. It was also disingenuous of the network to use the kiss in promos to get folks to tune-in, then to trim it right out of the episode.

Same-sex kisses are hardly controversial these days – even on a broadcast network.

Desperate Housewives‘ just took Dana Delany’s character down bi-curious Lane. Last year on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) had a sizzling kiss with Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith), and one of the most passionate kisses I’ve ever seen on television was on ‘Grey’s when a soldier made out with his boyfriend in his hospital room. Over on ‘Brothers & Sisters,’ married couple Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) often casually share kisses and the Earth continues to turn on its axis.

Perhaps ‘L&O’ producer Dick Wolf and NBC may reconsider and put the kiss back in for any encore showings of the episode – it should add all of one second to the running time.
