It wasn’t just the audience and judges that were clearly surprised that 20-year-old Colorado native Lilly Scott was eliminated from ‘American Idol‘ Thursday night, the folks behind the scenes and on the show feeling the loss at the top 12 party in Hollywood later that evening.
“I was shocked,” ‘American Idol’ vocal arranger/coach Debra Byrd, told Fancast at the ‘American Idol’ top 12 party in Hollywood last night. “I can’t say why it happened.”
Michael Orland, the show’s associate music director, has a theory, though. “We were all shocked,” he told us. “I got to tell you, I feel like she and Crystal [Bowersox] maybe split some votes. I think they have that same vibe going on. They’re a little off center, bluesy, and kind of R&B. I think Crystal got a lot of praise this week and Simon called it. She was the one who beat. I think it definitely [affected the voters].”
Even some of the top 12 contestants were stunned by last night’s surprise elimination. “I did not think that Lilly was going home,” admitted Didi Benami. Siobhan Magnus adds, “It was a really big bummer.” Likewise, Scott McIntyre, who performed with Matt Giraud on the show, says, “It was shocking. I didn’t think that was good.”
Katie Stevens, who was in the bottom two with Scott, took it in stride though. “I was sitting there trying to smile, but I’m still nervous. It was definitely crazy,” she says. “You always have mixed emotions because Lilly did so well and she sang so amazing. And, you hope that you do well. But, I’m so glad to get another opportunity.”
